System of Care in California is gaining steam. Many county Interagency Leadership Teams are recognizing the usefulness of their ILT meetings, as additional reforms in California come forward. Among them, Community Schools, Multi Payer Fee Schedule, and new requirements for Managed Care Plan agreements. There are important data elements that effective interagency work invites us to monitor and review. Sharing one another's outcomes is essential to understanding the ecosystem and recognizing where community needs may be present. Today, January 16, 2024, we stand united for the National Day of Racial Healing, a crucial initiative established by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. This day calls for healing, unity, and action against the divisive impact of racism and systemic practices. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed disparities rooted in structural and systemic racism, affecting Black, Indigenous, and non-Hispanic white communities. With 246 public health entities declaring racism a public health emergency, including 21 state health departments, 94 county health departments, and 149 city declarations, progress is underway. Yet, challenges persist, from insufficient medical equipment to limited staffing and poor infrastructure affecting outreach to isolated communities. This year, NACDD urges members and partners nationwide to engage in healing activities, events, or strategies that address racism, bias, inequity, injustice, and social justice. Our commitment to racial equity began in 2020 with the Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) Alliance, striving to build and leverage a diverse and inclusive workforce and workplace. In 2017, NACDD released the Moving to Institutional Equity Tool: A tool to Address Racial Equity in Public Health, increasing discussion about public health’s role in racial equity and discussing why this is important to public health. Colorado is the 10th healthiest state in the US, with an obesity rate of 25.1% (3rd lowest) and a 5.7% (2nd lowest) rate of cardiovascular complications. Passionate nonprofit work helped create these results, and continues to push for more ⬇ Since 2013, Healthier Colorado has pressed for statewide policy to advance CO's physical, mental, and social health. Last year, they passed 16 different bills which, to name a few effects:-> Limited hospital facility fees-> Protected access to reproductive healthcare-> Assisted youth in accessing mental health careThis year, Healthier CO aims to further expand access to affordable housing, quality education, affordable healthcare, and addiction recovery services, in addition to addressing cycles in our criminal justice system which promote behavioral and social health harm. Public Health AmeriCorps Director AJ Pearlman shares her thoughts on 30 years of AmeriCorps improving the physical and mental well-being of all Americans:For 30 years, AmeriCorps has focused on creating healthy futures centered around access to health care, aging in place, food security, and combatting the opioid crisis. This February, as part of our 30th Anniversary, we are celebrating how our commitment to public health has led to a healthier future for our nation. From the ongoing opioid epidemic to mental health crises and significant health disparities in communities of color, AmeriCorps has continued to introduce innovative service pathways to strengthen our systems and build back better stronger. Most recently, we’ve accomplished this by partnering with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to establish Public Health AmeriCorps. Although we’ve had challenges for many years, the pandemic pulled back the curtain on our public health workforce shortage. In fact, we need 80,000 more public health workers to meet our country’s needs. Community and national service programs like Public Health AmeriCorps can help fill this gap—advancing more equitable health outcomes in our communities, diversifying our workforce, and building more capacity in our public health systems. Thank you to the thousands of AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers for joining the movement to address our nation’s most urgent health needs. Next week, August 28, 2023 – September 1, 2023, is the first ever National Community Health Center Awareness Week.According to the American Public Health Association, a community health worker is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of and/or has an unusually close understanding of the community served. This trusting relationship enables the worker to serve as a liaison/link/intermediary between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. A community health worker also builds individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support, and advocacy. Although, community health worker is a general term that includes a wide range of titles including outreach workers, health coaches, patient navigators, and promotores de salud, they are valuable member of the healthcare workforce. Research shows that community health workers improve health outcomes for people with conditions including diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease risks, and HIV.They help ensure people receive preventive care. Community health worker interventions save money by leading people to use more appropriate health care services and reducing the need for emergency care. However, despite extensive research demonstrating their value, community health worker services are not regularly integrated into the health care system and are not currently financed in a sustainable way.
