1. Egg Price Memes

We really wanted to leave inflation behind in 2022, but unfortunately it followed us into the new year. And this time, it came for eggs. Our scrambled, poached, or baked in a cake eggs skyrocketed in price at the beginning of 2023, finally making us wonder if we could actually go vegan. Ah, we just remembered cheese. Never mind.

Now, we can’t put all the blame on inflation. This price hike was largely to do a bout of avian influenza that swept through hens. Somebody get those chicks a mask already!

2. Speaker Of The House Confirmation Vote Memes

Even if you don’t care about politics, you probably heard about the long, exhaustive, and quite frankly, hilarious voting process for the new Speaker of the House. In the grand old year of 2023, it took Congress a whopping 15 times to elect Kevin McCarthy as the new Speaker to succeed Nancy Pelosi.

Like, sure. He won. He can add this new title to his resume, Twitter bio, and Pizza Hut profile. But it does seem a little like getting picked last at recess. Not that we would know, or still hold grudges from.

3. Andrew Tate vs. Greta Thunberg Memes

You might not think that a former professional kickboxer turned social media maniac and an environmental activist have anything in common. But apparently anything can happen in 2023.

There’s no way to explain this that doesn’t sound ridiculous, but Andrew Tate tagged Greta Thunberg in a tweet about his large sports car collection, probably hoping to bait her into an argument about climate change.

Thunberg shot back with a fire tweet suggesting that Tate has the opposite of BDE. That burned him into a fury, and he responded with a ridiculous video of himself just looking like a fool, with a Romanian pizza store box in the shot.

Authorities used this pizza box to find Tate and arrest him, because oh yeah, he was wanted for allegations of sex trafficking.

And then, we got memes. Whew. Can we take a nap now?

4. M&M’s Spokescandies Memes

Last year gave us the green M&M controversy, in which she traded her boots for more modest sneakers. But this year, thanks to Tucker Carlson, M&M’s said screw it all, the candies are gone! And in their place, Maya Rudolph would become the new chocolate brand ambassador.

Can’t we just go back to appreciating these sweet morsels for what they are on the inside, regardless of how they look on the outside? Because other than the blue M&M’s always turning our mouth a different color, they really do all taste the same. Even if you eat them in your bathtub while crying to Taylor Swift. And that’s just special.

Fashion isn’t the only thing that’s coming back from the 1900s. A photo of Kevin James as his character Doug Heffernan from the late ’90s sitcom “The King of Queens” made its rounds on the Internet in prime meme form. Why did this picture of his awkwardly cute side smile blow up like it did? We can only imagine that a Buzzfeed intern didn’t have much to do that day.

Even before ChatGPT ignited the AI discussion this year, the campy horror film M3GANgot people thinking, “Is this really a good idea? Also, I can’t believe you ate all the popcorn during the previews.”

The film stars Allison Williams as Gemma, who creates this “Model 3 Generative Android” for her niece Cady. The doll dances, kills people, is a queer icon, and a meme machine. She walked (on all fours) so ChatGPT could run. But hopefully not faster than us.

7. Girl Dinner

Part meme, part culinary genius, a TikTok from Olivia Maher gave girls, gays, and theys a way to identify their ideal meal. “Girl Dinner” isn’t a new thing, but it took social media by storm as people bonded over the fact that sometimes all you need is some cheese, crackers, and maybe a pickle for an exceptional meal.

Tons of videos emerged featuring different kinds of “girl dinners,” including plenty of outlandish takes on the trend. Not that we’d be opposed to drinking the tears of our enemies for supper. It’s just so expensive at Erewhon these days.

8. Orca Attacks

As if the ocean wasn’t scary enough already, Orcas made their way into mainstream news in the summer of 2o23 for attacking and attempting to sink yachts. The Internet found it a little harder to sympathize with the rich boaters, what with the price of living these days, and made plenty of memes and jokes about siding with the big ‘ol Oreo bois.

Maybe next time don’t give them the idea of being “killer whales” in the first place?

It seemed like Elon Musk has been trying really hard to tank X, formally known as Twitter, on his own. But Meta Founder Mark Zuckerberg tried to beat him to the punch with the launch of Threads. Well, not a literal punch. We’re still waiting on that boxing showdown.

More than 30 million people around the world joined this eerily similar social media platform within hours. Because if there’s one thing our world needs, it’s more places for us to share a typo to our billions of followers. And by billions, we mean one of our two siblings and our roommate from freshman year.

And now for a meme that literally won’t die: The Donald Trump Debacle. Oh, you need us to be more specific? Yeah, that’s fair.

Trump got indicted for the first time in March 2023, which brought way more excitement than any silly old groundhog. Then in April, Twitter erupted with memes about his (non-existent) mugshot, which gave us enough entertainment until his second indictment. That’s when we actually saw his mugshot in August. And, made us feel a lot better about our inability to match our foundation to our skin tone in high school.

You think you know your partner, until you learn that they think about the Roman Empire, like…a lot. Women started asking men how often they think about this ancient time, and apparently, it’s pretty darn often.

Naturally, people started riffing off of this concept, like calling out what their own personal Roman Empire is. Of course Britney Spears was involved. What did you expect?

12. Barbenheimer

Our society hit peak cinema in the summer of 2023 with the release of Barbie and Oppenheimeron the same day. While some people used Barbenheimer as an excuse to sit in air conditioning all day, others used it as a way to flaunt their meme making skills. There was contrast. There was juxtaposition. There were plenty of other SAT words we mostly remember.

Our feeds were pink and black for a literal month surrounding this phenomena. But with Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy as the faces of each film, we weren’t one to complain. About this instance, anyway.
